Location production forms a part of Kentucky's heritage. Even before the Kentucky Film Commission began to promote the state, producers came to Kentucky to film classics like Raintree County, How the West Was Won and The Kentuckian.
Since 1976, the Kentucky Film Commission has added to that tradition, developing programs to meet the needs of the film industry and a network of professionals in the state to support location filming.
Of course, it all comes down to location, and Kentucky has some of the best. Whether you're looking for period towns, scenic outdoor areas or bluegrass horse farms, Kentucky has a site for your production.
The state is known for its thoroughbred industry. Kentucky's horse farms, tracks and the one-of-a-kind 1,032 acre Kentucky Horse Park have been featured in a variety of television and feature films. and others filmed at horse related sites in central Kentucky, including Keeneland, Turfway Park and Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. These horse related features were shot totally or partially in the Commonwealth, The Thoroughbreds, Black Beauty, Rare Breed, And They're Off, The Champions, Carnauba, Sylvester, Bluegrass, A Horse for Danny, Simpatico, Seabiscuit and Dreamer.
Thoroughbred and harness racing tracks can be found all around the state. Some of the most famous are Churchill Downs and Keeneland, both National Historic Landmarks, and The Red Mile, which boasts a structure on the National Register.
