Kentucky is blessed with natural beauty as well. The Appalachian Mountains dominate the eastern part of the state. This rugged area includes the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest just 50 miles southeast of Lexington. The gorge, composed of 25,662 acres of lush vegeta tion, contains the highest number of natural arches in a concen trated area east of the Rocky Mountains. Nearby is Natural Bridge, the most magnificent of the natural arches.

Kentucky's cave country offers more spectacular natural wonders, like Mammoth Cave, the world's largest cave system, with more than 300 miles of passageways. While not nearly as large, a variety of caves can be found at Carter Caves in the eastern part of the state. Kentucky's caves have been internationally famous for almost two centuries.

Although Kentucky has more miles of running water than any other state except Alaska, Kentucky's waterlands aren't all rivers. In Western Kentucky are huge lakes which surround Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Farther west, swamplands were featured in Norman Jewison's In Country as Vietnam. In the south central area of the state is Cumberland Falls, known as the "Niagara of the South." The 125-foot wide falls drops 68 feet into the gorge below and is the largest waterfall east of the Rockies except for Niagara itself.
